February 2025 Travelling Back in Time

One of the highlights this month was a visit to Our Lady of the Rosary School in Calgary, to visit the Grade Two classes. They were just finishing their study of the Acadian community of Meteghan, Nova Scotia.

With the help of an authentic Mi’kmaq porcupine quill box and our imaginations, we travelled back in time to 1755 to learn about how the Acadians lived before the deportation.

The story of how the Acadians were sent away from their homes is a very sad story.

Today the Acadians in Nova Scotia are proud of their Acadian culture and heritage. We had a quick visit to Meteghan and counted the Acadian flags we saw along the way. There were a lot!

The best part about school visits is getting to talk to the children and answer their questions. It’s also fun to get thank you cards and know that they enjoyed the adventure!

Thank you Grade Twos of Our Lady of the Rosary. I had a lot of fun!
